A charming neighborhood and a leafy square Palace by Principe Real Square North of Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara is the district of Principe Real, essentially an extention of Bairro Alto, with a pleasant square and shady garden. In the center of the square is a cafe and some exotic trees, including a hundred-year-old cedar that looks like a giant umbrella, all surrounded by colorful 19th century mansions. It includes horseshoe arch windows, pyramidal spires, and circular, Oriental-style domes topped by pinnacles, now housing a shopping gallery called Embaixada. This is also Lisbon's gay and lesbian district with several gay bars and clubs, and the area with the most antique shops and galleries, especially along Rua da Escola Politecnica and Rua Dom Pedro V. Going down Rua de São Marçal leads to another charming leafy square and garden, the Praça das Flores, right in the center of this peaceful district of colorful town houses.
