Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!

What an amazing city - filled all the senses .. such warm hospitality, amazing food and history abounds - the artisans and craftsmanship of the local people was astounding - I loved every minute during my stay from the getting lost in the Medina's alley's to exploring the historic city - My tour guide Hassan was magnificent - so spoiled by all his knowledge and ability to read his customers.... We so enjoyed all his recommendations and more importantly - all the knowledge he shared with us - Please make sure you allocate enough time in this beautiful city and enjoy the hidden Roads and their restaurants! The food and spices are simply amazing!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you

The Medina and its surrounds are very charming to look at from a rooftop, however to be quite honest, spending time walking endlessly in the narrow and enclosed space felt quite oppressive. We weren’t interested in buying anything and it was a bit of an assault to see the endless offerings of basically the same things. The merchants looked resigned to their fate and the energy of the place just didn’t feel great. Kind of depressing.

Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina.
Fez is a beautifull city with a gorgeous old medina. We didn't use a guide but google maps and it worked just fine for the main roads. But if you stay near the old medina and need to go somewhere via the narrow alleyways you can get lost easily! It's a maze where everything looks the same.
The people are mostly friendly but they will try their best to get you in their shop or restaurant which can be frustrating. But just say no respectfully and most of the time they will leave you alone.
Don't listen to people who are saying things are closed, like the doors of the medina or places during prayer time. Its not true and they only do say that to get you to another place.
After all its a beautifull place, but with sometimes frustrating locals, but they just want to make money and I understand that.
My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Riad Fes Kettani. Unfortunately, I fell ill on the second day of our trip, but the staff at the Riad were extremely helpful and took my stomach troubles into account when preparing our dinners. Latifa even prepared some rice porridge especially for me. I can't thank her enough for that. The Riad is absolutely gorgeous. Our room was very comfortable and clean and the staff were the nicest, most helpful people I have ever encountered in a hotel. I highly recommend Riad Fes Kettani!
Amazing place to stay in Fes! Hatim was nice and organized a ride from the airport to the hotel in the last minute. Gave us some good tips for our visit to Fes. Omar provided an amazing service and prepared our Suhur at night since we were fasting the next day and we loved every single detail about the food and the service. The room had an air conditioner which was great. Very good price for a hotel in the heart of Medina in Talaa Saghira.
If we ever come back to Fes, Dar Chourouk would be our choice number 1 ❤️❤️
We LOVED LOVED LOVED our stay at Dar D'or. The location is superb...just outside the medina walls means that transportation can leave you right at the front door. The building is gorgeous and peaceful. The breakfast freshly made with local juice and fruit each day. Namir and his staff are beyond spectacular. Kind, helpful, warm and inviting, and provided connections to local guides and settings that are unbeatable. Our time at Dar D'Or was without doubt the best part of our two week stay in Morocco.
Amazing riad — the building itself is beautiful but it was the staff that made it the best riad in Fes, highly recommend. Shoutout to Medhi for bringing us lots of tea, helping us with a currency exchange, and calling us a taxi. Soukayna was wonderful, very kind and hardworking, a pleasure to talk to. She gave us a great crash course on the cultural and educational system in Morocco and helped figure out if we bargained well in the medina (which we did not). 10/10 would book again
Wonderful hotel with great service. The staff is so friendly and helpful. We were a large group of 3 families, each with 3 kids, so certainly were not easy guests. But the staff was always friendly, so nice to the kids, and helped us whenever we needed help. The Riad is one of those beautiful palaces you would never expect from the outside. Stairs and rooms can be small, though, but this is normal if you want to stay in the medina of Fes. The breakfast was so delicious!
The staff at Palais De Fès were the epitome of hospitality. They were not only friendly but also extremely accommodating, going above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and memorable. Their attention to detail and eagerness to assist with any requests, whether it was about room amenities or local recommendations, truly made a difference.
The atmosphere of the hotel is one of elegance and tranquility, a welcome contrast to the lively energy of the Medina.
The hospitality of the Fez is unbeatable. Imane was such a great and kind host; she helped us in getting to know Fez and arranged our excursion to Chefchaouen. The room was incredibly spacious and clean. We particularly enjoyed the moroccan mint tea that we could order anytime. The breakfast was also absolutely delicious. Last but not least, we were beyond glad to order our last lunch in Morocco in Dar Fes Medina. It was the best food we’ve ever had in Morocco!
Really great location in the old Medina in Fes in a restored historic home. Breakfast was very nice and dinner was good as well! Violeta was friendly and interesting to talk to. She even packed us snacks because we had to leave early and could t stay for breakfast. Very hospitable. She also arranged for a tour guide of the Medina. Her name was Fatima and she was fabulous. The best guided tour we had in Morocco! Ask for her.
Could not recommend staying at Fes Touria Palace more! Amed organised our transfer from the airport and provided exceptional service from the moment we arrived - he could not have been more helpful. The hotel is beautiful and situated in the perfect location in the Medina. We did a desert trip hosted by Amed and Jafaar and it was an incredible experience and must do when visiting Morocco, it exceeded all expectations!
Oshman, who was the host at Dar Malmamoun, made my trip to Fes special. Oshman is unassuming, passionate about Fes, meeting and connecting people, and went out of his way to make my stay a good one. He is very knowledgeable of Moroccan culture, history, and of course the best spots for any food or goods in Fes. He single-handedly made my trip to Fes the highlight of my stay in Morocco.
The hotel is exactly like the pictures, very beautiful and authentic. The terrace/rooftop has great views to the medina and is a great place to have a tea.
They cook the best food we have tasted in Fes.
The staff was very welcoming, but special mention to Amine, who was very helpful and gave us great recommendations and made us feel like at home at Medina Social Club. 100% recommend.
This beautiful hotel in the heart of Fes is perfect. Hassan was the absolute best as were the other staff. They made us feel so welcome and ensured we were comfortable at all times. The room was incredible and the breakfast and mint tea were delicious. We loved everything about this accommodation and highly recommend it, 10/10; 5stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very helpful staff. Excellent location and the rooftop view is breathtaking. Not so many of them in Fes, Medina, so it's worth any extra penny to pay for it. The best thing is, that if you travel through Morocco in winter, they provide heaters or air-conditioned rooms. Quite crucial for usually cold nights in here. We will definitely be back....
Its a unique little boutique-style hotel near the city of Fes. Accessible and walking distance to the Medina and shops. Friendly owners (Salah & Nour) and staffs. Great hospitality. Nour even arranged some tours with us so we won’t get lost in the Medina. They also packed us breakfast as we were rushing for the morning train.
The location is one of the best. So close to and with easy access to the medina of Fez. And to have the quiet and feel of your own slice of paradise at that location is quite unique. The nearby parking(s) are conveniently close and the low cost make them worthwhile. We also enjoyed the very good breakfast. Well done.
The Riad was absolutely amazing!! It was the most beautiful property during our whole stay in Morocco, the internal architecture was stunning, it was super clean and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast had a wide range of options. Last but not least, the terrace was also charming with a nice Fes medina view.
The staff was absolutely amazing. Mohamed the hotel manager provided everything we could ask for. I can’t say enough about the experience. The breakfast probably the best I’ve had in my month stay in Morocco. The location is perfect. The rooms as exactly as stated and very nice. Hot water and a great bathroom.
A beautiful hotel decorated in Moroccan style in the heart of the Medina. Beautiful view of Fes from the roof. I would especially like to thank Said and Mohamed for their help with everything we asked them, they were always patient and ready to help.
**Chef's kisses** Hands down, this is one of the best hostels I stayed at in Morocco. The host is one of the friendliest, professional hosts I met. I highly recommend it.
Best location for visiting the old medina of Fes
