Stay away from Kathmandu especially Thamel if you can, it is noisy, polluted, dirty. As pedestrian you share the narrow alleys with hundreds of Nepalese scooter and motorbikes riders, who drive dangerously passed you, without a care about your safety. I recommend to wear masks if you don't want your lung to be filled with hazardous smog. There is an app called AirVisual which tells you how bad the air quality is in and around Kathmandu. I recommend to stay as little in Kathmandu as possible, take a taxi or bus to Bhaktapur and use it as your base instead! It has beautiful sights of historical temples walking distance away, is less overrun by scooters and hotels are very nice and are cheaper, food is delicious: try the local highly praised juju dhau (yoghurt type dessert), souvenirs are higher quality and cheaper.

There are a lot of historical places to see nearby and some nice nature excursions through day trips as well. A lot to explore in terms of culture and shopping. It can be a little dusty and polluted at times so better to wear a mask when walking around the city.

We stayed in Kathmandu following the flight and to organise the remainder of our trip. I believe that 2 days in Kathmandu is ample to explore the city and take in the sights either before heading off to explore the stunning beauty of Nepal or when finishing the trip

Nepal is like another world, well worth visiting for the adventurous and open-minded.
Mountains, Hindu temples, Buddhist stupas and Tibetan monasteries, cities bustling with cheerful people and open-fronted shops, squalor and beauty, power cuts, street dogs and chickens, chaotic beeping traffic, 50% motorbikes and scooters, sometimes with more that two on board, which nevertheless an old lady can somehow cross safely.

So many things to see and experience, truly awesome.
So many things to see and experience, truly awesome. Lots of places to eat to experience the local cuisine. lots of places are within walking distance and the taxis are very cheep to get to the places out of walking distance. On a word of caution, wear a face mask, the air pollution is chronic. One disappointing thing that I found quite shocking was that the supposedly "sacred river" that flows through the city was treated as an open sewer. The smell and sight of raw effluent coming from the waters was horrific.
This is a great place to stay in Kathmandu. The hotel is newly-opened after having been closed for several years. The style is traditional but in no way outdated. The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming of all requests; I have never been taken care of as nicely as I was here. The best part about this hotel is the garden, which is a place of complete tranquility even though it is in notoriously busy Thamel. Increbile value for money for my stay. Thank you to Khagendra and his staff-members for their lovely attitude.
Set back from the main street in a cul de sac Kathmandu Garden House is in a quiet location with clean rooms and attentive, welcoming, helpful staff. Such a pleasant difference from when we previously stayed at a neighbouring guest house! The garden provides a tranquil atmosphere to the place with birds singing and is an attractive place to hang out... as are the cool table and chairs set in the hallways. The hotel is a little oasis of calm from the busy nearby streets and alleyways of Thamel.
Very clean and modern place, nice interior, good/hot showers, comfortable mattresses (not as hard as in the other Nepali hotels we have stayed), fast WiFi, quite location in Thamel. But above all this, very very friendly staff and management. They were very supportive when my friend got sick, making her tea and offered their help. The management was very flexible when we asked for some changes in our booking and did their best to meet our needs in any way.
When I first arrived in Kathmandu I was seeking a value hotel in town. I believe honestly that Hotel Everest is the best value for your money in all of Kathmandu! From the kind staff that have no accommodated me so well, I feel like they are a second family. The breakfasts, the rooms, the hot shower, the assistance - everything is fantastic. I will always stay here when I am visiting Kathmandu! Thank you Mani Arbin Himal and team!

I will recommend this property who visit Thamel Kathmandu Nepal
The best thing about the property is people who work there, kind, professional and always there for you to make your stay comfortable. The rooms are clean and have everything you need for your stay. The location is perfect in Thamel, walking distance to Durbar square, restaurants and shops. They provide an airport pick up and that's a big bonus. Nice terrace on the top of the hotel has beautiful sunset views. I recommend it!
We had a great stay at Nivas Boutique hotel. The staff was truly amazing and always there to assist for anything, showcasing the best way they could the famous Nepalese fantastic hospitality! While location is 10min walk away from Thamel, its just a straight walk to get there making it quite good and away from the traffic.
We will be back!

A Delightful Stay in the Heart of Kathmandu's Thamel
I recently had the pleasure of staying at a hotel in the vibrant neighborhood of Thamel during my visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. From the moment I stepped into the hotel, I was warmly welcomed by the attentive and friendly staff, setting the tone for a truly enjoyable stay.
What a wonderful place to stay in Thamel! The hosts are amazing people, who are always happy and ready to help with any quiry. In 5 stars hotels you do not feel such a care like here. The rooms are clean and there is everything you need for the stay. Indeed it is a Happy Home :) I will definitely stay here on my next trips.
The room was good, not the fancy or that clean place but with its price it was worth it.
Have own bathroom in this price, and the location was also good.
With only the hotel, I would recommend to other travelers who are looking for budget room.
U'll never find other place in the middle of Kathmandu with this price.
