We've been to Nikko a couple of times before but this is the best place we've stayed. We felt like we hit the jackpot because it beats the competion hands down.  Incredibly warm welcome, authentic Japanese rooms with lovely touches, high quality kitchen, bathroom and entertainment areas, bikes to use, scrupulously clean. Nothing, absolutely nothing, to complain about. It's a flat 2 minute walk from the bus and train station, very quiet at night, there's a big well priced proper local supermarket around the corner (2 mins walk the other way), and lots of restaurants nearby. All too easy. For us though the best part was that we really felt cared for - Yoshi is such a kind, helpful and genuine host. No problem too big or question too hard, he guided us to areas we didn't know about around Nikko. Plus, to be honest, it was lovely to just sit and talk and connect with a local person. That's what great about travelling hey? Anyway, we loved it, our two kids loved it, and it's a perfect base. When we visit again it's where we'll stay. Don't stuff around just book this place.

Koundo Guest House is a beautiful 2-store traditional style japanese house located in a lovely neighborhood nearby many touristic spots in Nikko. The manager - a kind and discrete old japanese man who sleeps in a room downstairs - receptioned us with soft drinks and showed us the house facilities and a map of the neighborhood. We loved the whole experience and we certainly want to come back one day.
