Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops.
Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops. The staff in the subway are pretty touchy, and you have to get the clipper card to use public transport. The area going away from the wharf is quite seedy, like an open-air opium den with drug users injecting in public. Some of the cafes included taxes of ~$30USD, bringing out breakfast for 2 to $85. Better to ask ahead. Expensive place overall.

Union Square is right in the heart of San Francisco with lawns, steps and trees. A perfect square amongst expensive hotels and Macy's store. Nice to sit and eat lunch and watch the passing parade. Also the cable car goes up the side street of Union Square.

It feels very run down and really scruffy.
It feels very run down and really scruffy. It’s not the best part of the city and there are so many vagrants which can feel very intimidating when they shout at you, I know it’s not their fault but it does become scary especially at night time.

We went for the pride parade.
We went for the pride parade. This was a very moving experience and I don't regret going. What was concerning is the security. I was nervous the whole time due to the crowds and lack of police visible.
It took over two hours in line to get into the actual celebration event.
This was a nightmare. Way too over crowded and unorganized. Not enough ways to get in and out. For an event this big there it should have been better planned for.

This hotel is in a superb location, just a few steps away from Union Square and very close to the cable car line to Fisherman's Wharf. Being in a city, the rooms are a little smaller than you would normally get but they are still a good size, clean and homely after a long day out sight seeing. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we would most definitely stay here again when visiting San Francisco.
Hotel was great, super comfortable, fantastic amenities (loved the Cow Shed and the Grind coffee in the room), close to transport links, walking distance to Union Square shopping, great coffee shop downstairs, and friendly staff.
First off the staff were exceptional - every single one - and couldn't do enough to help, smile.and be friendly jumping from reception, to the bar to being full on baristas.
Even the security guys on the lower floor were always attentive and friendly.
Funky hotel, minutes away from the BART, cable car terminus and Union Square.
And don't miss the "secret" rooftop bar.
So impressed we will use the Citizen M brand next time we are in London.
Good location, almost on Union Square with all its' upmarket shops.
Friendly, obliging staff.
Quirky hotel - there's a theatre on 2nd floor and some society called Elks Lodge have a huge presence / history here.
Comfortable lounge / reception area where they serve complimentary sherry each afternoon and coffee / biscuits each morning. A nice touch.
Generous size bedroom, walk-in wardrobe and very nice bathroom with plush towels and toiletries.
Good location just off Union Square. Even though there is no restaurant at the hotel they have arranged a 20% discount on meals at an excellent diner (Masons) just around the corner.
The room was extremely comfortable, and the staff was helpful and considerate. The happy hour wine and cheese was an extra touch that made us feel really welcomed. Both in Petite Auberge and its sister hotel have really nice common lounge areas. It is extremely well-located if you need to be around Union Square.
Very good location, very close to Union Square and severla shops. The hotel is very querky with a nice retro vibe and the staff is very kind, but overall rooms were quite dusty and could be cleaner. A bit noisy at night.
Fantastic location right in Union Square. The staff was very friendly & helpful. The hotel itself has character & charm with very comfortable beds & pillows. Very clean. Tasty cookies & coffee on offer. We really enjoyed our stay there.
The hostel is really close to Union Square and that was fine. NonetheIess it was absolut quite during the night. I had a private room and for me it was a good and less expensive alternative to a room in an hotel. Staff was very helpful. The "living room" ist beautiful and cosy. There is even a small terrace in front of the kitchen.

Venture outside the most touristy areas like Pier 39 and Union Square - go to Hayes Valley, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, Cow Hollow, the Marina

Avoid using the cable car in the morning from Union Square or the afternoon from Fisherman's Wharf
Prebook trips such as Alcatraz. Avoid using the cable car in the morning from Union Square or the afternoon from Fisherman's Wharf. Very long queues.
