We stopped here as a port of call on our S. American cruise. After experiencing Buenos Aires, I wasn't too optimistic or excited to be stopping here (how wrong I was). Immediately upon leaving the port, we were greeted by folks from the tourist department who handed out city maps which included a walking tour of the old town. The area of the old town immediately outside of the port was very interesting. We saw a building which housed several steak houses which were grilling all kinds of meats over open flames (their version of the food court at the mall). The place was packed and it was very interesting (although we didn't stop to eat anything). We walked through the old town and there were a lot of interesting European style buildings, and the walks were lined with vendors selling souvenirs. We came across several small squares, including one which had an antiques market going on. We saw several people walking around drinking something from what looked like a coconut with a metal straw and holding a thermos tucked under their arm. Somehow we ended up talking to a local man doing the same and he was very friendly. He explained what the drink was and allowed our daughter to hold his cut and thermos for a photo. Overall we really enjoyed Montevideo and would recommend it! It was one of the highlights on our cruise.
My favourite spots were Mercado del Puerto, Agricultural Market, Punta Carretas shopping and eateries, Teatro Solis. Montevideo is a nice city but a bit expensive.
if you speak Spanish, Montevideo is quite enjoyable for its lovely architecture and chill, laidback citizenry. if you don't speak Spanish, you will struggle here as you will not encounter many Uruguayans with a usable grasp of English. don't miss: Independence Plaza/Teatro Solis, the Legislative Palace, the Rambla, and neighborhoods like Pocitos, Punta Carreras, Carrasco, and Ciudad Viejo (the latter, only during daylight). side trips to Punta del Este, Piriapolis and Colonia del Sacramento are worth it and easily booked.
Maybe I didn't hit Montevideo at the right time or stay in the right area. Made the unintentional mistake of being there on May 1 -- everything was closed for a holiday. And I mean EVERYTHING -- couldn't even find a restaurant open at night. Stayed in Ciudad Vieja, which I thought would be rundown chic, gritty, but charming. I found it mostly to just be rundown: dirty buildings, lots of street people loitering around, higher percentage of drunks, homeless, and panhandlers than I expected. The historic buildings downtown are interesting and worth a look (in the day), but it loses what charm at has at night when most places close downtown. Would recommend staying outside Ciudad Vieja in other, nicer parts of Montevideo. Good city to make day trips from.
-horário de funcionamento muito limitado, só em dias de semana. Fomos em uma segunda-feira feriado e estava fechado sem infos no site sobre isso. Retornamos na quarta e foi uma visita imperdível para Montevideo
Montevideo was very relaxed and kind of dead. We spent the night but felt like we could have seen the city in a day. There was only so much to see. To be fair, we were here in the winter so it may not have been a very popular time of year.
Montevideo es una ciudad increíble y que en cualquier época del año vale la pena visitarla. Si mejoraría el servicio de restaurantes en fechas festivas, la mayoría cerrados y los que abrieron cobraron muy varón por una cena Fe fin de año.
Highly recommend renting bikes to ride to the beach. Montevideo requires taxis, but the old town is walkable. The market at the port is expensive but worth it! Jacinto is also a must eat. Amazing food!
Montevideo is a beautiful city. It is a city with history and espectacular building from the last century. However it is a expensive city when we talk about food.
Montevideo is a gret city to go on for a visit if you enjoy going to the beach, visiting a museum or having a coffee or a dinner at a nice boutique or gourmet restaurant. Uber is working fine in Montevideo and it is a bit cheaper than taxi riding, so it is my choice when I have to move in the city. The "Old City" or "Ciudadela" is the place where Spanish first settled in when founding Montevideo in 1726 by Mauricio de Zavala. Here is a nice spot to go on promenading, where you will find nice restaurants and cafes, places to go where you can enjoy a gourmet menu in a budget fare. I would recommend La Corte, Jacinto, or Urbani. All these restaurants are family friendly, with a gourmet cousine, and they are open from Monday to Saturday afternoon. Anyhow, check their schedules and open hours before going. The beaches, are great to go in Summer if you enjoy sunbathing or swimming, from Pocitos And Ramirez to Carrasco Beach. All of them have lifeguards service and most of them have spots where you can buy soft drinks, beer, or water, and some bites of fast food. In most beaches you can find people who have chairs and sun umbrellas for rent. An useful advice: ask people who already are in the beach if it is safe swimming where you are. Sometimes you can find jellyfish in the water. Some spots have twisted water currents which could be harmful, especially for aged people.
Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
Very central location, directly next to the main square and Solís theatre. The conversations with the owners were always nice and easy via WhatsApp. Check-in was very simple and they even let us stay some extra hours after check-out, as our bus onwards was only in the evening. The view from the apartment is fantastic! There are plenty of options around, with a supermarket and a pharmacy in the same complex and old town with cafés and restaurants right around the corner. We couldn't have had a better stay in Montevideo
Beautiful hotel in a similar style to Soho House, all of the spaces were lovely and well designed. Loved the rooftop with the pool and view, and the huge, super comfy and luxurious bed. The staff was all nice and super helpful. Walking distance to the beach and restaurants. Had a burger there which was great, and the ribeye from room service was the best I’ve had in Argentina or Uruguay (including Don Julio!). I don’t think there’s a better place to stay in Montevideo.
Pocitos, Montevideo
The hosts here are FANTASTIC. Some of the nicest people that we met in Uruguay. They are incredibly friendly, helpful, and honestly cool people. They make you feel like they are your best friend. The room was great. Everything was comfortable and very clean. The shower had good pressure and hot water. The location is good and there are lots of great restaurants and stores nearby. I have no complaints and will without a doubt stay here the next time I am in Montevideo.
Montevideo
Excellent apartment. Very clean, well equipped, comfortable bed, nice big terrace. It has a personal touch; e.g. an interesting library instead of depersonalized decorations. It is located close to a Parliament building (which at the time of our stay hosted the 5th Montevideo Bienal), the university area and some alternative cultural spaces (excellent exhibition in Contemporary Art Space – EAC, located in the former Miguelete prison). The owner was really very kind.
Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
Hostel Viajero is the best option for digital nomads in Montevideo, the relationship between price and comfort is incomparable with other places in Montevideo, the treatment of Facu, Michelle, Hernan and JuanMa at the reception is simply unique, the cleaning staff It keeps the Hostel in an extraordinary state, the breakfasts are very good and the facilities of the place are incredible, the wooden elevator and the terrace, everything is simply spectacular
Parque Rodo, Montevideo
The dorm rooms were well air-conditioned (there was a heatwave when i was there so this was super important) and bunks had curtains for privacy. Rooms were a good size and did not feel cramped. Beds and pillows were comfortaable too. Also probably the most well equipped and cleanest hostel kitchen I have seen. Toilets were clean too. Michael and Vincent were amazing hosts - very warm and friendly, giving tips for Montevideo and travelling in Uruguay.
Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
Spacious, comfortable room. We very much enjoyed the sauna and the pool, which we used to cool down from the sauna! The location is very central, close to several attractions and museums. There is a small functional kitchen in the apartment, which is a real bonus. Staff recommend us a fabulous restaurant, which we loved. We’ll definitely stay here again when in Montevideo.
This is our go-to hotel in Montevideo and our third time staying here. The heated pool is very nice, rooms are spacious, comfortable bed. Good, if pricey, breakfast. Maids were pleasant and accommodating to our erratic schedule. The travel museum in the lobby is interesting. Great location a block from Plaza Independencia and the Old City. Quiet at night, no street noise.
A great hotel near Main Street, but absolutely nothing to do in Montevideo… we thought we’d go across in ferry to Montevideo from Buenes Aires… stayed here 3 days but dead streets and no tourism. Hotel staff are super, breakfast was ok - only down side was single bed sized… they were like only 2.5 foot wide and not big enough for us 6 footers… otherwise all good…
Montevideo
The apartment was absolutely great! Very clean, spacious, bright and perfectly located not that far from downtown Montevideo with plenty of stores nearby. The host was amazing, she was very kind and attentive. It has all the appliances to cook and wash your clothes so it was very convenient. If we go back to Montevideo, we'd love to stay there again.
Hotel is in a early 20th century or maybe late 19 century building, which is maintained well. Room was priced very well; I don't think there is another hotel existing in Montevideo matching the price they offer. Room was large enough, decorated with authentic furniture matching the building's era. Staff was very pleasant and helpful.
This was my second stay at the Oxford Hotel and I must say that on both occasions the service was excellent, the room and the hotel, in general, were very pleasant and comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. Excellent option to stay in Montevideo and great price-quality ratio. Highly recommended.
I loved the Hotel location! It was close to Punta Carretas Shopping Mall and there were lots of options to have dinner and to buy some stuff. From the Hotel it was easy to go anywhere in Montevideo and it was also close to the beach. The WiFi was great and free. The room was enormous and comfortable.
Friendly, centrally located hotel in Montevideo! Room was spacious, clean and comfortable, with all a nice set of amenities. The staff were all really helpful and personable. And the location is great for walking to the center and old town or catching a bus to the beach. Also a very fair value!
The location is ideal, the customer service was top notch, the room I stayed in was quiet, soothing and super-clean. You could, of course, pay more to stay at another place, which perhaps has fancier towels. Hotel Casablanca will always be an option whenever I am in Montevideo.
This hotel is by far one of my favourite hotels I’ve stayed in, the detail in the rooms about different famous Uruguayans was lovely, the staff couldn’t be more helpful, the breakfast was the cutest breakfast I’ve ever had! it’s the only hotel you should stay in in Montevideo!
The Hotel is affordable for smaller budgets and located within walking distance to the Buquebus ferry terminal, so its a perfect hub for those coming from or going to Uruguay. Also, it right in the middle of the historic city center and allows to discover Montevideo easily
Very conveniently located if you need to be near the bus station. Clean room. Comfortable bed and good shower. Toiletries are decent quality for the level of hotel. This is my favorite hotel in Montevideo if I'm in transit (if the price is right as it can vary a bit)
Functional. Nice reception - especially the friendly woman from Cuba who cared a lot - and of course: the sauna, which was hard to find in Montevideo. I then booked another 6,7 nights at the reception because the hotel was really better than expected.
Pocitos, Montevideo
Location exceptional, safe, and beautiful neighborhood, and just 4 blocks away from a trendy beach. The staff was very friendly, hanging out with us whenever possible, and the breakfast was ok (the price was good, considering Montevideo's prices).
