This was the perfect introduction to Japanese culture for us. The staff were exceptionally helpful. They taught us how to dress in the traditional Japanese clothes, helped us with information on the Nakasendo walk, and provided beautiful meals. We were picked up from Nakatsugawa Station and taken to the accommodation, and the following morning they also drove us to Magome to start our Nakasendo walk. They even transported our bag to Nagiso for us. The service from the staff was exceptional. The chef Masaya Yoshida made us beautiful meals for dinner and breakfast. The rooms are traditional Japanese houses with a lot of space, separate rooms for sleeping and dining and private bathrooms in the houses as well as the public onsen. The houses are in beautiful gardens and the rooms have lovely views of the grounds. It is very peaceful and quiet, outside of the main township. This was a fantastic place to stay, and a great Japanese cultural experience.

Despite not being fluent in English, all staff (the one family working well together) were welcoming, polite and helpful and were able to develop a more personal connection with guests. Enjoyed the short tour of the village by car at 3.30pm (if you check in and book by 3.15pm) dropping us drop off at the observatory so we could walk back down the hill. Great dinner and breakfast with interesting local dishes and use of local ingredients. Pleasant and interesting music with meals. Wonderful river view and interesting design of room. Lovely wooden onsen overlooking the river. Close to bus and the whole villiage. Everythibg very clean. Spring water onsen and to drink. Was worth the price.

Customer Service
The customer service from the staff is exceptional. I believe the hotel/staff uses Booking.com as the main communication, after I completed the booking, they sent me a message a few days before the check-in to let me know some basic info. I overlooked it. Otherwise, when you arrived the hotel, there was a staff that showed you around the hotel, introducing you the facilities, the procedures and regulations, what time is dinner/breakfast, what to eat, bathhouse regulations, etc...
They will help you with your luggage and as I drove to the hotel, you just need to drive to the front door and they'll help you park the car.
Room
The room is spacious and clean with separate toilet and shower/bath. If you choose the tatami bed rooms, not to worry about it. Whilst you have your dinner, they will set it up for you so when you return to your room, its well set up.
Bathhouse / Onsen
They are clean and very comfortable. Obviously there are separate male and female ones with indoor and outdoor available. Two very different settings. We only managed to explore the outdoor ones. For the outdoor ones, they usually change it overnight to give both male and females a different environment and views. I would suggest you to visit it at check-in and go for a quick visit in the morning before you check out. As I only stayed for 1 night, I didn't manage to have time to visit the indoor one.
Food
I chose the dinner and breakfast option, it was very delicious and well enough to eat. Most of the dishes were small portions but after a few dishes it should be enough. Inside the room there is a biscuit and tea available.
Environment
There are plenty of resting and lounge areas for you to sit down to read, watch your on tablet or chat with friends/family/partner or simply just zone. There is one big lounge or resting area that has 2 massage chairs, 2 sofas with some basic small massage equipments to massage yourself.

The place had so many great extras; private onsens, complimentary tabi socks, a very good breakfast, free ramen at night. The hotel provided the full Japanese-style experience, with shoes left at the lobby and yukatas to wear, but also had a decent amount of padding in its futons. The staff were very accommodating to my non-existent Japanese.
Clean and comfortable traditional inn with tatami floor and futon beds. Loved the private onsen that you can book for 45 mins. Staff were very friendly. Location was good too, walkable distance to the Gassho Village and the food street.
Amazing old mountain Ryokan near the Shinhotaja Ropeway. Delicious food, comfy futons. We had a big family room with great views. The onsen were the best, beautiful, right by the river. Many thanks for your warm welcome.
What a beautiful ryokan! This was such a treat to stay here and a very memorable part of our trip around the Japan. The lovely lady host looked after us and we had a fabulous evening meal here, beyond what we could have hoped for. After a long day walking in Kamikochi it was also wonderful to have the onsen to both relax and recharge! The rooms were very charming and the futons here were the first good night sleep we had after struggling with jet lag. Definitely recommend to others.
Located in a beautiful onsen town. Was the perfect place to stay after spending the day in Kamikochi. Short walk from the bus terminal. The room was spacious and clean. Yukata are provided for guest use. We enjoyed the private onsen which were open from 15:00 to 09:00 so I was able to use it in the morning. We found the futons to be quite thin compared to other places we had stayed, so not as comfortable to sleep.
Nice and comfortable Ryokan. Common showers (locked with a code for ladies) and toilets are very clean and convenient. The common area downstairs with free tea and coffee is spacious and ideal for groups of friends who want to hang out before heading back to their rooms. We enjoyed the tatami room with comfy futons.
Traditional hotel with private onsens located near the station and a pleasant walk to the Hida Folk Village. Novelty leaving one’s shoes in reception and walking on the tatami mats, also sleeping on a futon. Good restaurant recommendation and free ramen at hotel although we didn’t try it.
Beautiful yet remote ryokan. It has a real authentic Japanese feeling complete with tatami floors, futon beds and (private and public) onsen. Highly recommend the kaiseki add-on, it was delicious!! Very spacious room with private bathroom and outside onsen. We had a wonderful stay!
Staying at Ryokan Asunaro is an authentic experience. Our comfortable room, wearing the yukatas, sleeping on the futons, the kaiseki dinner and breakfast, the onsen - was all so enjoyable! The staff are very courteous and friendly too.
Beautiful Japanese Inn! The room was spacious, and the futon was comfy enough to asleep. Free drinks available downstairs and for the breakfast. Onsen was small but well maintained. This Ryokan is old but the shower room and toilet were all renovated and super clean. Staffs are very kind!
