The grounds are well kept with lots of plants. The room was clean, beds soft, hot showers, and the AC worked well. There is a microwave to heat food down stairs. After 8 weeks in Peru (Cusco, Titicaca and Arequipa), I loved PM. Its a gold rush town that is sort of grungy, but more than any other place I visited in Peru, I felt like it was authentic and actually has a soul. There aren't many tourists walking around in town and the locals aren't in your face pretending to be your best friend and trying to sell you something. I found most people a bit shy and reserved, but not at all unfriendly. I spent a couple of days wandering around and really enjoyed myself. My purpose for visiting was to do do one of those eco amazon tours. I found the whole eco-tourism experience totally concocted and a huge waste of money, so it was a bit of a relief to see an authentic side of Peru. I'm not sure I would visit PM just as a destination on its own, but since I was there already, its definitely worth a couple of days. While I was there, the city had its annual birthday parade; all the school children and school band marched through the city to the main square. Each band played its own rendition of Happy Birthday and For He's a Jolly Good Fellow.....it was awesome! Make sure and walk out on the bridge over the Rio Madre de Dios at sunset, it is magic. Also, don't miss the mercado on Calle Ica and Ernesto Rivero, great place for local food and produce you can buy big bags fresh Brazil nuts.
The rainforest was extremely interesting but I probably shouldn't have come in December/January, which is the rainforest (I know; the clue is in the name). Except in the grounds of the lodge where I stayed it was difficult to spot much wildlife and the guides said it was because it was the wrong time of the year. I wanted to see - amongst other things - the macaws at the clay lick but it wasn't possible because they don't come when it's raining. Also, when it rains it absolutely chucks it down for a couple of hours, during which time there's not a lot you can do. And if you are in a lodge with shared bathroom and need the bathroom during that time, you're going to get very wet! This sounds like a negative review but it's not all negative. The scenery (when they sun's out, which is for most of the day) is beautiful, especially along the rivers. Food is good. I loved kayaking on the Madre de Dios, the canopy walk in the jungle (until it started raining), seeing birds and butterflies, playing with monkeys in the grounds of my lodge ... In short, do pay Puerto Maldonado a visit but try to avoid the wet season and you're likely to get more out of your visit.
I only spent one day in Puerto Maldonado though I spent a couple of days in an eco lodge on the river Madre De Dios and that was wonderful
Very clean and with a fantastic view of the Madre de Dios river. We wanted to stay an extra night but there were no rooms available. Still, the owner gave us some options to enjoy the day at the hotel and use the pool after our check-out.
room was comfortable and a good value
I absolutely loved it here, the staff are incredible! so polite, helpful, and knowledgeable. the guides really know how to spot cool wildlife and tell you about it. the rooms were comfy and there was electricity and wifi, which I wasn't expecting! an incredible experience please come here!!
Great location for anyone who wants to be surrounded by nature - there were some monkeys living at the lodge and plenty of other wildlife to see around the reserve. The rooms were comfortable and the food was much better than expected. If you struggle dealing with insects and/or high heat and humidity this is probably not for you. Note there is limited internet access with some availability at a nearby animal rescue centre. For most people I would recommend a 2 or 3 night stay. I was ready to rejoin civilisation after the third night, mostly due to the heat and limited facilities.
The staff were great and super friendly. The rooms were cleaned every day and the balcony had an amazing view. The room had air con which kept it a nice temperature at night. The shower was brilliant. The restaurant: we tried the salad, the amazonian fish and the pork spaghetti and all were fantastic. The breakfast fruit bowls were the highlight though, aside from the cocktails. A day by the pool was heaven with music, drinks and beautiful sunshine. There were birds, boas and sloths. I didn't want to leave.
Wasai Lodge completely exceeded our expectations on every level. The staff were so kind and friendly, the rooms were fabulous right on the river with very comfortable beds. Food was amazing with a huge amount of variety. Our guide, Efrain, was so knowledgeable, engaging, funny and made our trip even more fantastic - he was born to be an Amazon tour guide!! Clem who runs the lodge was so friendly and helpful throughout our stay and was always on hand to answer questions. We felt very safe during our stay. This is an amazing lodge and would highly recommend it!
Very nice accomodation, very good Food. I liked that everything was organized and you could just follow the trips that were planned. Very nice staff
This place is outstanding! Highly, highly recommend! The lodge and rooms are clean and comfortable (if you are going in winter, bring warm clothes). The food is buffet style and very good, and is culturally relevant! My daughter (17) chooses not to eat a lot of food, and she was always able to find something - rice, chicken, plain rolls). Your group is assigned a guide, who is present when you are picked up at the airport, on all excursions and accompanies you to the airport when you leave. That makes for an in-depth experience on your excursions as the guide knows your group’s interests, and the information about the jungle previously shared with you. Just this alone is worth the cost. We loved the Macaw clay lick experience. Seeing the brightly colored birds in a flock - incredible. The night walk we did twice, and saw a tarantula as big as my hand, all kinds of spiders, a poisonous centipede, scorpion. There are different kinds of monkeys all around the lodge and on the excursions. In our last day, an eagle (an apex predator) was in the neighborhood, and all the monkeys came down from the trees to be safe. So cool.
Everything was excellent! Especially the staff was super nice, friendly and helpful. The place is very beautiful and quiet, situated on the jungle. There is beautiful Shaka for yoga where you can meditate. Everything was awesome!
Literally everything about my experience at Tambopata was absolutely superb!! Cannot recommend highly enough.
Our tour guide, Charles, was excellent. We learned so many things about the Amazon.
Beautiful property in the middle of the jungle. We looked at several other lodges but picked this one for it's more modern amenities. This is an all inclusive lodge. Rooms are screened in (not all lodges are) with 5500 acres to themselves. The cost includes daily excursions around the many trails that they created for the guests leisure. The trails take you in to the depth of the jungle while experiencing the beauty that it offers - monkeys, birds, tarantulas, snakes etc. Guilds were extremely knowledgeable and kind. always on the lookout for things to see. Things to consider - bug spray - the local ones work better than the US ones that we brought. Clothing - while hiking - long airy pants and quick dry long (or short) shirts will make your hike more enjoyable. I brought 2 but I wish I had 4-5. Best room is called "Tarzan". We stayed in "Tucan" which was OK but close to other visitors. Hard to describe but you can hear anyone in proximity to your room since it is all screened in. Staff was SUPER hard working. They were on their feet from 4 am to 10 pm daily. I have to tip my hand to these folks, simply incredible! 10 thumbs up for the staff
Everything was as advertised. We got an airport shuttle in both directions and he was always on time. Breakfast was delicious -- better than any continental breakfast I have had at a hotel in the USA. It comes out buffet style and isn't under warmers, which others have complained about but I thought it was fine. The pool and restaurant are both on the 7th floor and they're lovely; I highly recommend getting a meal at the restaurant and eating it at one of the tables by the pool that overlooks the city. I really don't know the area, so I can't say if it is in a good location or not, but I always felt safe enough for someone traveling internationally.
