Matsumoto
At the ryokan, units are fitted with a wardrobe. All units have a shared bathroom, slippers and bed linen.
The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in.
Had to check in early which wasn't a problem. The two staff were great - they speak English quite well, and were very patient with our very poor Japanese. Dinner + Breakfast is really good (but you do need to let them know you would like to have dinner when you are making your booking).
Kamikochi, Matsumoto
At the ryokan, every unit has a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV, a shared bathroom, bed linen and towels. The units are fitted with a safety deposit box and certain rooms include river views. The units include a tatami. We had a wonderful time at the Nisha-itoya lodge. The staff were very attentive and helpful and looked after us so well. The Japanese food was wonderful and seemed to get better every night we stayed and they were able to accommodate my fussiness and my partner’s veganism. The public bath had a gorgeous view of the mountains.

This was easily the best place I have stayed at... It was faultless. The standout for me was the staff. I thought the GM was the owner but he was just helping out his friend, the receptionist really gave me all the right advice, and a fellow Aussie working there took me out on the slopes and showed me how to go through the trees and powder.

It's a traditional style Japanese ryokan. The room was very clean and with a good space. The hotel provides towels, yukatas and traditional sandals which can be used to tour the onsens in the village. Overall good fun. There is a cafe/restaurant in-house (the longest opening hours in the village). The staff were really helpful and friendly - providing free shuttle services to station, other onsens in the area, and snow monkeys park.

Nagiso
The spacious rooms at Fuki no Mori Hotel come with private bathrooms with free toiletries. All rooms have traditional decors, a seating area and a balcony with views. Most rooms have tatami (woven-straw) flooring with futon bedding. A beautiful luxury hotel set in forest outside Tsumago, with hotel shuttle bus access. Everything was perfect- from the warm welcome, being conducted to our room, shown the onsen and dining room, where breakfast and dinner were exceptional (in Keisei style and well worth the additional charge). It was a most relaxing stay after our Magome to Tsumago walk- 6 hours in drenching rain- but still very beautiful to be again on this marvellous walk.
Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi
Bright rooms come with a traditional decor of tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low table with seating cushions and traditional futon bedding. They are fitted with a seating area, an LCD TV and a fridge. A safe and yukata robes are provided. everything was amazing and everyone was so nice 10/10
Nagano
Guests sleep in Japanese-style rooms located in annex buildings. Fitted with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and futon bedding, the rooms feature a flat-screen TV and a seating area with a low table. Bathroom is shared with other guests. Wonderful traditional ryokan owned by the Oshi family for 200 years. I stayed in a spacious tatami room on the ground floor with beautiful views of the garden. Very peaceful to sit and stare outside. Delicious breakfast and dinner add on options and a very friendly host who made me feel like I was in a second home. Will definitely be returning again. The ryokan is conveniently located steps from the bus stop and takes about 1 hr on a direct bus from Nagano station. It's 3 mins walk from the steps of the first of five shrines (lower shrine) of Togakuji so I highly recommend completing the Togakuji "pilgrimage" trail to see all of them. Beautiful 300+ yr old cedar trees line the paths. Togakuji is the birthplace of soba noodles and beside Chusa Otorii (middle shrine) is the #1 soba noodles restaurant, Uzuraya. There are long wait times at the restaurant so I put my name down at Uzuraya on my way up on the hike and it was ready by the time I returned to dine right away. It was around a 3 hr roundtrip hike from the ryokan or 4-5 hrs with breaks and lunch. Great way to explore the area.
Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi
The air-conditioned rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. Each room comes with a TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags. Japanese Yukata robes are provided and guests can enjoy views of the river or of the traditional stone-paved streets. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. The hospitality was great, the location is stunning and the ryokan itself is very comfortable and makes you feel at home. We had dinner and breakfast and they were able to accommodate one of us being vegan with both meals being delicious. The onsens are very quiet and very well maintained, and can be used for free by the ryokan's guests. Akira-san also offered to take us to both the snow monkeys resort and the station, which was great.
Nozawa Onsen
Japanese-style rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low table with seating cushions, and an LCD TV. They come with traditional futon bedding and yukata robes, while bathroom facilities are shared. The location was excellent, close to the free shuttle bus pick up point to Nagasaka and a mere 6 min walk from the Shinden bus stop. The owner was super helpful and kind, going out of his way to help ensure that my stay was great. He offered a ride from the Shinden bus stop on arrival, and constantly checked on whether I needed anything else. He also readily provided information of the area, and provided guidance of where to eat around the hotel. The room was really clean and comfortable, and it was a really big room. A different snack is given daily too. Overall it was an excellent stay, and I would be happy to return again, if I can get a booking.

There are not enough words to explain our experience at Yorozuya. We got to know the Ryokan hospitality by first hand. The employees were very respectful and considerate, the food experience one that nobody should miss and the Onsen facilities great. Room was clean and spacious and the futon bed comfy. This experience definitely changed our perception about hospitality for ever. Thank you Yorozuya!
The room was the traditional style Ryokan, large space with comfortable futons and seating area. A heater was provided. The hotel had a private onsen (but it was Very hot). The late check-in was useful and the staff were friendly.
A lovely traditional Ryokan right in the middle of Nozawa main village a short walk from to the Yu-Road escalator which takes you straight up to the ski area. The hosts are lovely people and the traditional breakfast was delicious. It also has it's own onsen.
I had an amazing stay in Uotoshi Ryokan ! I felt like I was traveling back in time, with the decoration being so traditional and Japanese like. I really recommend the place, the onsen is nice, the rooms are very calm and the futon was comfortable. I also had a kotatsu (winter heating table). The owner took me to the entrance of the monkey park and was very helpful. He could speak a very good English ! Breakfast is Japanese style and it was really good 😊
Great location, in house restaurant for breakfast and dinner, traditional Japanese Ryokan. Despite being a tatami mat with futons, the bedding was extremely comfortable. Free bus pick up from train station as well as free bus drop off to Snow Monkey park. Staff were very helpful and provided lots of information about what to do and how to do it. Shared bathroom facilities were quite basic but OK. The bonus is the key to the public onsens, all 9 of them.
Loved the traditional Ryokan. Cosy rooms with comfy futon style beds. We had a room at the front with an indoor balcony that overlooked the street. Had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, which was great. Staff were really friendly, helpful and spoke English. They supplied Yukata and geta to wear out to the onsen - the closest was only 50 meters up the road.
The owners were very lovely and did their best to accommodate us, picked us up from the station. It was a very nice experience to stay in traditional japanese ryokan, room was like from another era, had a tea set and futons, but there were also ac, humidifier and fridge. We used an onsen, had yukatas, it was all very comfortable
Lovely hotel. Room is very big with an amazing view of the city and mountains. The room has a traditional ryokan look with tatami floors and futon, the bathroom has a nice little bathub. The onsen is nice and clean. The staff, even though they couldn't speak english, made the effort to communicate with translator, and were very friendly and helpful, and in the end even gave me a lovely gift.
We loved everything about this ryokan - beautiful, spacious room with comfortable futons. The owners even provided tea and yukas for the private onsen in the ryokan, which was wonderful, and apparently quite a rare sight in the area as many hotels in the area have onsens only outside of their property. We paid extra for the traditional breakfast and it was delicious. The owners even gave us local appels as a gift when we checked out and it was the best apple I've ever tasted.
